When it comes to hiring coaches in college athletics, it s similar to the way blue jeans go out of style: what s hot one year may be considered dated the next. The next morning, you wake up to discover that your skinny jeans coach, who looked so good when you bought him, has a losing record and must be fired. As far as this is concerned, the SEC may be the ultimate follow-the-leader league. In football, the Nick Saban Assistant Trend has been around for a while, and for good reason, if not always with consistent success. (Yes, there are three: Kirby Smart, Jimbo Fisher, and Lane Kiffin.) No, Jim McElwain, Will Muschamp, and Jeremy Pruitt. Billy Napier, on the other hand, is still up in the air.) When it comes to men s basketball, the trends have been even more noticeable. In 2010, when the league made yet another attempt to catch up to Kentucky, the Big Name Established Coach Trend was on the rise again. The following Final Four coaches, who were looking for a second act, were hired: Ben Howland is the coach at Mississippi State; Rick Barnes is the coach at Tennessee; and Tom Crean is the coach at Georgia. The SEC s youth movement is in full swing, with a whopping six new hires in just one month. Many of those well-known names have been phased out of the game. A more traditional hiring cycle is about to begin, with rising coaches entering the league from the mid-major ranks, where they are less experienced and less expensive than their professional counterparts. Matt McMahon has been promoted from his previous position at Murray State to that of LSU. Murray s age is 43, and he has no previous Division I head-coaching experience. Two times in the NCAA tournament, McMahon has come away with victories, once in 2019 with Ja Morant and once this season with a team led by a couple of Morant s former teammates from that season. At Murray, he s recruited the living daylights out of the South. The question is whether he will perform better in a power conference than most of Murray s successful coaches, who have a combined record of more than three decades of remarkable program consistency. However, Steve Newton, Sco
