Scientist 5 Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Scientist 5 to provide support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in Santa Rosa CA. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. This position entails freshwater and estuarine habitat conservation for NOAA trust resources particularly in central California. The primary objectives are to implement the statutes and mandates of section 7 of the ESA and the essential fish habitat (EFH) provisions of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Management Act (MSA) regarding Federal actions that may affect freshwater estuarine and marine habitats. Salary commensurate with experience.DutiesLead and complete regulatory reviews and associated Endangered Species (ESA) Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) consultations for projects with potential impacts or benefits to submerged aquatic vegetation in freshwater and estuarine habitats. Provide technical assistance and expertise regarding the protection and conservation of federal ESA-listed salmonids green sturgeon and EFH. Required Knowledge and ExperienceKnowledge of salmonid biology life history and habitat needs. Ability to evaluate effects of proposed federal development actions on fishes and their habitat. Expert knowledge of estuarine and marine habitats including seagrasses and kelp. Knowledge of evaluation planning and analytical methodology and techniques to make in-depth evaluations and analyses of potential effects to aquatic habitats associated with a range of situations and issues. Strong written and oral communication skills. Preferred Knowledge and ExperienceKnowledge and experience with Section 7 of the ESA and MSA Essential Habitat regulations.
