SEXTANT and CASE - Nautical - 1928 English - Mohogany Case - - J

Refurbished antique English J. SEWILL Sextant. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a ship s position (latitude and longitude) from the observation of the heavenly bodies. Based on the information included on the unit and case it was built in 1928 by Joseph Sewill Ltd based in Liverpool England. This lattice frame has a triangulated ladder pattern which contains a seven inch rapid release index arm two mirrors and eight shades. The graduated brass arc with inlaid silver is stamped with serial number 15970 and J. SEWILL LIVERPOOL . The silvered scale reads from -5 to 140 and it is readable to 10 seconds of arc using the vernier scale. All the components are housed in the original mahogany dovetail case which measures 11 x 11 x 5 with brass hardware including the original Secure lock. The inside of the lid has a TEDDINGTON Certificate of Inspection dated 19th October 1928 attached with the serial number matching the sextant. The accessories include three Telescopic Sights (2 5 10 power) two Eyepieces (medium and dark green) Adjustment Pick and spare Horizon Mirror. This sextant shows limited use and there is no apparent damage. The prior owner indicated that her father kept it in dry storage for many years. The case bottom has the typical stress crack across the width and the lock key is a replacement. Overall the unit is in exceptional condition considering its advanced age.This ten pound nautical artifact is the perfect example of superior British. craftsmanship and is a rare piece of international maritime history.
