I am offering an original (not a reproduction) large cast brass six spoke ship s Helm Wheel. Based on the size design materials used and quality this wheel was likely built prior to WWII in the USA for use on a large supply ship. It measures 42 (handle to handle) and the keyed hub is 3.00 wide x 2.50 deep. During WWII many of the U.S. freighters were used to supply our troops in Europe and were referred to as Liberty Ships. Two of the wheel s spokes have raised letters as follows 2E and JM86-850W- . Also the spoke support ring has two riveted brass tags attached (just off each side of top center) that read LEFT RUDDER and RIGHT RUDDER with arrows pointing in that direction. The 5 wood handles appear to be oak and are well worn which indicates years of sea duty and exposure to the weather. I have owned this wheel since 1979 and have fabricated a wall mount that allows the wheel to turn firmly as if at sea.
