Refurbished Mid-1900 s 3 Wet Magnetic Compass mounted in a 3 gimbal ring. Compasses of this size and design were often used as a backup compass or in a lifeboat. This unit is made of brass and mounted in a 4 square x 3 deep mahogany dove tail case and lid with brass hardware. The 2 compass card is signed with an interlaced WC which indicates it was built by the prestigious WILCOX CRITTENDEN COMPANY based in Connecticut. It seems to point in the right direction and if full of oil (no air bubbles). The compass card and metal bar has some stains but the dial is readable.The bottom of the case has the typical stress crack and has the scratched initials ABH imbedded. This 3 pound functional artifact has seen extended sea duty and is the perfect example of quality U.S. craftsmanship.
