FOGHORN - Nautical - Antique English Rotary - WOOD CASE -- NORWE

Antique English Norwegian Pattern Foghorn. During dense fog a ship s crewmember was assigned to crank this device (at certain intervals) especially in congested waterways. Based on the design and materials used it was built in England in the early 1900 s. It features a 4 diameter copper horn (with brass bezel) mounted in a 21 x 15 x 8 knotty pine case with dovetail ends and tongue and groove sides held together with brass screws. One side of the case has the original stenciled information NORWEGIAN PATTERN ROTARY FOGHORN but the leather carry strap has been replaced. The brass wood crank handle appears to be original and there are remnants of the instructions still attached to the top. When cranked the sound in not constant due to some air loss in the bellows which is typical of foghorns this age. This twenty-one pound nautical artifact is a perfect example of British maritime history. Additional Nautical Items Available - Please Call Cliff (at) 760-942-2025 For More Information.
