SEXTANT and CASE - Nautical - Early 1900 s English "Hezzani

English Heath Navigational Ltd. of London Hezzanith Sextant. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a ship s position (latitude and longitude) from the observation of the heavenly bodies. This lattice frame with a ladder pattern contains a seven inch rapid release index arm Based on the design materials used and exceptional quality this unit was likely built in the early 1920 s. The instrument is brass with a wood handle and is housed original dove tail mahogany case. The silver engine-ruled measurement limb is calibrated from - 5 to plus 155 degrees and it is readable to 10 seconds of arc using the vernier with tangent screw and swinging magnifier. The manufacturer s tag is mounted on the radius arm which reads HEZZANITH ENDLESS RAPID READER AUTOMATIC CLAMP --PATENT-- and has these words (around each rivet) SEMPER (Always) PARATUS (Ready) which is the U.S. Coast Guard s motto. Also the brass ark is signed HEATH & CO LTD NEW ELTHAM LONDON . The Heath name dates back to 1720 when Thomas Heath began making instruments on the Strand in London. In 1845 the firm s name was changed to Heath & Co and it continued in business until the mid-20th Century. Heath used the trade name Hezzanith on many of their instruments to denote their world famous quality craftsmanship. The accessories include a sighting tube two magnified scopes adjustment pick and case lock key. All the filters mirrors and scopes are in good condition but the case lid has the typical stress crack across the top. This nautical artifact is a fine example of British Maritime history.
