BOAT SPEED INDICATOR and CASE - Nautical - Mid-1900 s - Stainles

I am offering an original mid-1900 s DRAG KNOT INDICATOR which is made of Stainless Steel and Brass. These devices were mounted on the port or starboard side of small to medium size boat to measure its speed in knots per hour. This very unique devise was patented in 1939 using a totally new concept to measure speed through water. The stainless steel body has a scale of 0 to 12 nautical miles per hour. The speed was determined by attaching a two pound brass lead disk to the unit with a lightweight steel cable and dragging it through the water. As the boat s speed varied the disk offered more or less resistance which moved the indicator bar up and down the scale. The builders information is stamped on the lower body which reads as follows DAVID MOFFAT MYERS U.S. PAT No. 2.152 768. MFD. BY W.H. VANGAASBEEK EAST ORANGE N.J. . Included is the original 9 x 7 x 2 dovetail wood case (with slide in lid) a 3 x brass lead disk a 65 steel cable (with brass disk pin) and an 40 extension cable. It has a few scrapes but appears to had had very little ( if any) sea duty. I have been dealing in nautical items for many years and this is the first one I have seen. I would guess that these devises were not very successful and very few were sold. Because this 4 pound nautical artifact is so unique and rare it would be a great item to include in your collection and should appreciate in value.
