COMPASS and CASE - Nautical - Early 1900 s 4¼" Magneti

Refurbished early 1900 s 4 Wet Magnetic Compass mounted in a 5 gimbaled ring. Compasses of this size and design were often used as a backup compass or in a lifeboat. This compass is made of brass and mounted in a 6 square x 4 deep mahogany tongue and grove case with brass hardware. The case lid has 3 brass pins so it fits in only one position. The 3 compass card is signed POLARIS which was built by MARINE COMPASS CO. based in PEMBROKE MASS. There is a small metal bar mounted in the center of the compass card that reads PAT. DOT. 1911 . The compass liquid (mineral oil) is full and the readings appear to be accurate. This quality unit is very unique in two respects. First it has 6 volt lighting with the original screw in miniature bulb fixture and cloth covered wire. Second it has a brass slotted moveable window cover that allows 60 degrees of the scale to be read and concentrates the light in that area. Also included is a newer power supply to light a 6 volt bulb. The wire cloth cover is quite frayed and the case bottom has a 2 crack caused by one of the brass nails. This four pound functional artifact is the perfect example of quality U.S. craftsmanship. Additional Nautical Items Available - Please Call Cliff (at) 760-942-2025 For More Information
