Home of the Good Shepherd JOB DESCRIPTION RESIDENT ASSISTANT Position Description The Resident Assistant (RA) supports assisted living operations by performing a variety of resident care housekeeping and resident activity duties as assigned by the Case Manager RN or LPN. The following functions are performed in accordance with Home of the Good Shepherd s mission policies and procedures as outlined below. Essential Functions are as follows. Other duties may be assigned. Performs personal resident care as assigned including but not limited to 1. Assists residents with dressing and undressing when necessary. 2. Provides bathing assistance personal grooming and hygiene when needed. 3. Assists residents with toileting when needed including assisting with urine and bowel incontinence. 4. Serves prepared food to residents. Guides and directs (and assists when necessary) residents with eating. 5. Uses range of motion activities and exercises (ambulating positioning and lifting). Facilitates resident activities and relations including but not limited to 1. Assists residents in participation of scheduled activities. 2. Completes daily care assignments accurately and timely. 3. Records all care rendered and response or lack of response. 4. Provides comfort measures. 5. Assists with resident emergencies. 6. Immediately report changes in resident conditions. Performs housekeeping duties as assigned including but not limited to 1. Changes bed linens 2. Cleans tidy s up resident s room dining room etc. 3. Wipe vacuum and sweep as necessary 4. Empties waste baskets in resident rooms 5. Collects soiled laundry 6. Puts away clean laundry 7. Washes and dries resident s clothing Assists in maintaining a safe and healthy environment including but not limited to 1. Works safely practicing preventative measures at all times. 2. Practices infection control and universal precautions. 3. Takes action to eliminate potential hazards as necessary. 4. Maintains a clean and orderly work area. 5. Reports any incidents or injuries to the licensed nurse or manager. Creates and maintains a positive atmosphere of customer service including continuous quality improvement teamwork mutual respect professionalism and accountability. Attends and participates in all appropriate Inservice meetings and training development opportunities. Embraces upholds and promotes Home of the Good Shepherd s mission vision beliefs values and strategic goals. Adheres to the attendance policy. Assists in orientation and training of new employees as assigned. Follows established policies and procedures including but not limited to 1. Home of the Good Shepherd s policies and procedures. 2. Nursing department policies and procedures. 3. Infection control policies and procedures. 4. Federal state and local regulations. Qualifications To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill and or abilities required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified disabilities to perform the essential functions. 1. Ability to read comprehend write and speak English. Ability to perform basic math functions such as adding and subtracting. High school or equivalent preferred. 2. Certified nursing assistant and Home Health Aides preferred. 3. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 4. Ability to accurately record data on resident records. 5. Must be able to communicate with geriatric residents in a patient calming kind and positive atmosphere. 6. Must be able to address emergency and non-emergency situations calmly and thoroughly and apply common sense to the resolution of problems. 7. Must possess an understanding and helpful disposition. 8. 18 years of age per licensing requirement. Previous Experience None however experience with the geriatric population especially experience with Alzheimer s and dementia is preferred. Physical Skills Requirements Standing walking bending reaching stooping kneeling use of hands and lifting up to a maximum of 50 lbs. of weight. Working Conditions The employee will work in a resident care environment and will have occasional exposure to unpleasant resident care tasks with exposure to communicable diseases if proper universal precautions infection control procedures are not followed.
