TAFFRAIL LOG ASSEMBLY- Nautical - Early 1900s with Case - EXCEL

Refurbished early 1900 s Brass Patent Boat-Log built by Thomas Walker in England. These mechanical devices were mounted on the boat s taffrail (stern) connected by a towline to a rotor which was drug in the water. The register recorded the rotor s revolutions and converted them into nautical miles. The assembly includes a Register (with short Safety-Line) Outrigger Arm Rotor Sinker approximately 100 feet of braided Towline and a funnel shaped Walker s Oil Tin with adjustable brass nozzle signed VALVESPOUT PAT. PEND. . There is a custom made wood plate that sits over the nozzle to hold the tin in place.The register contains two dials (0< 10) (0< 100) nautical miles and has an enameled face signed Walker s Excelsior IV Log Made in England by Thos. Walker & Son Ltd. Birmingham. This 11 brass rotor has one side of each fin stamped Trade Mark (Anchor Symbol) T. W EXCELSIOR on each fin. The opposite side of one fin stamped T. WALKER & SON LTD. BIRMINGHAM ENGLAND . All these components are housed in the original dovetail pine case measuring 15 x 7 x 6 which has the original brass hardware attached. The Fitting and Operating Instructions with the stamped CHECKED BY box is still affixed to the inside of the hinged lid. The manufacturer s label is attached to the front of the case and indicates the model as Outrigger pattern 27 . Also included are two brass shank bolts for mounting the outrigger arm but the mounting shoes are missing This twelve pound marine artifact is a fine example of British craftsmanship and is a rare piece of international maritime history.
