SEXTANT and CASE - Mid-1900s - Excellent and Unique - England -

Refurbished antique English Husun Sextant and Case built by Hughes & Son London. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a vessel s position (latitude and longitude) from the observation of the heavenly bodies. Based on the design quality and materials used it was likely built in the 1940 s. The ( 5< 140) degree graduated arc scale is brass with inlaid silver and is stamped as follows MADE FOR JOHN STOTT 21208 H. Hughes & Son Ltd. 59 Fenchurch St. London E.C. . Also the 6 radial arm has the HUSUN trade mark tag in place. The accessories consist of a 2 power scope sighting tube lock key mirror adjusting tool and eye piece filter. This unit is one of the early lighted sextants as indicated by the switch and battery compartment located in the hardwood handle. The lighting is not functional but could be restored with used parts that are still available. The sextant and accessories are housed in its original dovetail mahogany case which includes a functioning SECURE LEVER lock and original maintenance instructions. The case lid has a clear plastic viewing window which appears to have been installed by the original builder. Since the sextant was made specifically for John Stott he probably also ordered a custom made case to fit his needs. Also there are also two unused custom made wood scope mounts attached to the bottom of the case. The unit is in excellent condition showing very limited use but does have a stress crack across case bottom. This nautical artifact displays very nicely though the case window and is a perfect example of British maritime history.
