Introduction Whelan Machine & Tool a Louisville KY based ISO9001-2008 certified defense industry precision manufacturer is searching for an experienced Manual Machinist to join our team Founded in 1989 Whelan Machine & Tool is located on the former Louisville (KY) Naval Ordnance Station and does business with major defense contractors as well as DOD DOE Navy Army etc. Holding tolerances to 0.0002 Whelan operations 3 4 & 5 axis CNC machining centers manual mills & lathes jig bores jig grinders surface ID & OD grinders and has full fabrication and welding capabilities. The Manual Machinist position is responsible for setting up and operating conventional precision lathes mills jig bores jig grinders and other special purpose machines to manufacture metallic and nonmetallic parts in a dimensionally accurate and process compliant manner. Preference will be given to those candidates with defense and government related manufacturing knowledge and experience and those with a proven track record of producing high quality high precision job shop parts. Minimum 10 years of relevant manual machining experience. Must be US Citizen bondable and not presently disbarred or under investigation. Required Knowledge and Skills Oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Proven skills in reading drawings and blue prints. Ability to producing a finished product from raw stock to the absolute specifications of the customer in a timely manner. General Tasks and Responsibilities Sets up and operates conventional precision lathes mills jig bores jig grinders and other special purpose machines to manufacture metallic and nonmetallic parts in a dimensionally accurate and process compliant manner. Fits and assembles manufactured parts into complete units applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures shop mathematics machinability of materials and layout techniques. Studies blueprints sketches drawings manuals specifications or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished product sequence of operations and setup requirements. Selects aligns and secures holding fixtures cutting tools attachments accessories and materials on machines. Calculates and regulates machining factors such as speed feed coolant flow and depth and angle of cut. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls as required. Verifies conformance of finished product to specifications using precision measuring instruments. Fits and assembles parts into complete assembly using jigs fixtures surface plate surface table hand tools and power tools. Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as micrometers height gauges and gauge blocks. Develop specifications from general description and draw sketch of part or product to be machined. Observes all 1st article in process and final inspection requirements. Confers with engineers production personnel and others to resolve machining or assembly problems. Performs other duties as required. Ability to operate all necessary tools to perform job. Ability to stoop and bend to inspect and disassemble parts. Ability to move and position parts on a hoist.
