SEXTANT and CASE - Mid-1900s - Excellent and Unique - Great Bri

Refurbished mid-1900 s English Sextant and Case. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a ship s position (latitude and longitude) from the observation of the heavenly bodies. It was built in 1956 by Kelvin & Hughes Ltd. based in London and has the original Certificate of Examination displayed on the inside of the case lid. The certificate is dated 31.8.56. and indicates serial number 63935 which matches the sextant. Also attached to the inside of the case are the original maintenance instructions and seller s NEGUS sticker. The 6 radial arm has the KH trade mark tag in place. The ( 5< 125) degree scale is brass with inlaid silver and is stamped as follows KELVIN & HUGHES LTD MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN MATE SER NO 63935 . This unit has a functional swivel scale reading light with two new AA batteries installed in the handle. The sextant and accessories are housed in its original dovetail 10 W x 6 T x 11 D oak case with brass hardware and a leather covered spring steel carry handle. The case also has the original SECURE LEVER lock with a replacement key. The accessories consist of a 2 power scope eyepiece sun filter original oil bottle and mirror adjusting tool. All the sextant filters lenses and mirrors do not have any obvious damage. Included is the original Bill of Sale from for NEGUS to Lee James Brennan for 206.00 dated Jan 9 1956 along with his name on a Dymo label that I removed from the case. This nautical artifact represents the perfect example of British maritime history. In my 35 years of dealing in antique sextants I have never seen a cased designed to house the sextant upside down. After a careful examination is appears that this was not a conversion from the normal mounting design. The mounting wood felt and hardware are professionally fabricated and installed in the case which holds the instrument securely in place. Without any evidence of prior mountings this unit could have been special ordered and therefore a very rare (possibly one of a kind) British nautical artifact.
