BINNACLE - Nautical - 8½" x 8½" x 9" C

Refurbished WWII era Lifeboat Binnacle with a Lietz 4 inch gimbaled Compass. Constructed of copper and brass the case measures 8 W x 8 D x 10 T and still has the original 5 x 4 beveled glass window in place. There is no manufacturers tag attached but based on the design quality and materials used it was likely built in the mid-1900 s for a compass builder here in the U.S. It appears that it originally had a oil font burner which has been replaced with 110v electric lighting. A brass Lietz compass is mounted in the case and its glass retaining ring is stamped as follows LIETZ 19578 U.S. NAVY BU. SHIPS 4 BOAT COMPASS MARK I (circled N) 2559 - 1940 . The lubber line has been extended through the brass glass retaining ring and also has been inscribed in the glass window. There is no fluid in the compass but it appears to function and point in the right direction. The binnacle base and chimney cover have been replaced plus the copper case has the typical scrapes and dings. This twelve pound nautical artifact is in good condition considering its advanced age and is the perfect example of U.S. maritime history.
