JOB SUMMARY This position is located at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System Sterile Processing Service Patient Care Service. KEY REQUIREMENTS U.S. Citizenship Full unrestricted Licensure Certification or Registration required Designated and or Random Drug Testing required Background and or Security Investigation required English Language Proficiency required Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12 31 1959 DUTIES Tour of Duty Day Shift Monday - Friday The Nurse Manager Sterile Processing Service (SPS) Intravenous (IV) Team is responsible and accountable for the 24 7 operations of their units ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with acceptable standards of care. In addition the Nurse Manager executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership experience and creative approaches to the management of patient care for adult and geriatric patients in accordance with the Michigan Nurse Practice Act Medical Center and VA standards of care. This position provides leadership by identifying and maintaining Sterile Processing Service (SPS) standards for the practice of all services including Toledo Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) and contributing to the fulfillment of the mission of the clinical areas. The Nurse Manager provides leadership in the application of the nursing process in assessing the decontamination high level disinfection sterilization process inside and outside the SPS to include reprocessing of all Reusable Medical Equipment (RME). The incumbent participates in assessing the environment analyzing trends transmitting data communicating ideas developing and processing policies initiating programs and collaborating in the management of resources. The incumbent has knowledge in the areas of patient care practices asepsis and disinfection sterilization. The incumbent ensures the practices of SPS is consistent with VA Standards VISN 11 policies and directives to include VHA Directive(s) external standards such as Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JC) Association of Registered Nurses (AORN) Occupational Safety and Health Administration Perioperative (OSHA) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). The Nurse Manager utilizes organizational processes or systems to improve outcome for the patient and organization. The incumbent has continuing responsibility for all the following functions (1) planning work to be accomplished by subordinates setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work (2) assigning work to subordinates based on priorities selective consideration of difficulty and the requirements of the assignments and the capabilities of subordinates (3) evaluating the performance of subordinates (4) making recommendations for appointments advancements or reassignments of subordinates (5) giving advice counsel or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters (6) hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors (7) recommending and or taking disciplinary action where appropriate and (8) identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training (VA Handbook 5007 Part III Chapter 8). The Nurse Manager is also responsible for performance measures performance improvement customer service patient satisfaction patient and employee safety interviewing applicants employee relations standards of care and practice the work environment and accreditation and regulatory standards. The Nurse Manager actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. The Nurse Manager is responsible for staffing their units on a continual basis (24 7) and working with other Nurse Managers to identify and share resources. The Nurse Manager is responsible for time scheduling of the unit coaching staff dealing with employee conduct and performance issues completing and submitting recurring reports proficiencies and performance evaluations in a timely manner. The Nurse Manager participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. The Nurse Manager identifies educational needs of staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. The Nurse Manager has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences as well as orienting new Nurse Managers. The Nurse Manager works in partnership with the union and adheres to EEO principles. In the absence of a Nurse Manager a cross-covering Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues such as staffing coverage granting leave and patient and or staff issues. The Nurse Manager will maintain competency proficiency in practice on their assigned unit and remain current with required certification for their unit i.e. basic life support (BLS) and or advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). The Nurse Manager reports to the Associate Director for Patient Care Services (ADPCS). Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.
