TAFFRAIL LOG and CASE - Nautical - Antique Excelsior IV - T Walk

I am offering a early to mid-1900 s brass Patent Log. These mechanical devices were mounted on the boat s taffrail (stern) connected by a towline to a rotor which is drug in the water. The register records the rotor s revolutions and converts them into nautical miles. This Excelsior IV was built by Thomas Walker & Son Ltd. Birmingham England and bears serial AJ892. The unit includes the Register Outrigger Rotor Sinker Oil Dispenser (40% full) approximately 100 feet of braided cotton Towline (with tow-hook) plus the port and starboard Shoe Plates including the original mounting screws. All the components are housed in the original dove tail wood case measuring 15 x 7 x 5 with all the original brass hardware as well as the Maker s Label on the front. This label has the serial number with appears to match the stamped impression in the register s body. Also the Operating Instructions are still affixed to the inside of the case s hinged lid. Included are a Speed Table Time and Knot Table and Length of Line Graph . This 11 pound artifact is a fine example of quality British craftsmanship.
