An Egyptian Blue-Green Faience Lion AmuletCULTURE REGION OF ORIGIN Egypt DATE Late Period to Ptolemaic Period 664 BC 30 BC DIMENSIONS 2.6 cm (1.02in.) long 1.5 cm (0.59 in.) tall DESCRIPTION Intact. A superb Egyptian faience uninscribed lion amulet set on an integral rectangular plaque. The animal s forepaws are depicted in detail to either side of the prominent head with its deeply inset facial features and large mane which has been indicated with raised chevrons and added black. Further shallow chevron patterns indicate fur on the well-defined body. The tail is shown curled over the right haunch. The base is uninscribed and is pierced as is typical of this type horizontally for suspension or attachment. The surfaces retain strong blue-green colors with only minimal encrustation in a few recessed areas. The amulet is secured to the wooden cube base with brass wire that runs through the stringing hole and through the wood block to the underside.PROVENANCE Formerly in the private teaching collection of Professor Jack Martin Balcer (1936-2004). Professor Balcer taught at Ohio State University for over 30 years. Known as Dr. B by generations of students Balcer s research focused principally on the Athenian Empire Greek numismatics and the cultural interactions between Greeks and non-Greeks in Western Asia Minor. He published many monographs and articles on these topics and was awarded research grants by the American Numismatic Society and Harvard s Center for Hellenic Studies among others.
