Early Byzantine Pottery Oil Lamp Holy Land 6th to Early 8th Cent

CULTURE REGION OF ORIGIN Byzantine Syria and Palestine DATE 5th - 7th Century AD DIMENSIONS 7.9 cm (3.1 in.) longDESCRIPTION formed from pink-grey clay with some dark inclusions this lamp is typical o f a class of early Byzantine lamps widespread in what is now Israel Palestine Jordan a nd Syria. Made in a mold it features a spike handle and relief decoration of palettes and con centric semicircles. A wide channel encloses both the fill hole and wick hole. There is considerable carbon black staining around the wick hole from use. The base is a raised circle with a circle and dot in relief at the center. Minimal encrustation.
