TAFFRAIL ROTOR ASSEMBLY - Nautical - Early 1900 s With Sinker/L

Refurbished early 1900 s Brass Taffrail Log Rotor Assembly. This assembly includes a sinker and 25 of braided cotton line which is whipped at both ends. This assembly connects to a register mounted at the stern of a vessel and is drug through the water by a long tow-line. The attached register records the rotor s revolutions and converts them into nautical miles. This rotor is not signed by the maker but based on the design materials used and craftsmanship it appears to be a good quality replacement for a Thomas Walker s Cherub model. The rotor measures 14 long x 5 wide and the sinker is 4 long x 1 wide. These rotor assemblies were often lost or badly damaged when being used in shallow water therefore the replacements are hard to find. This four pound nautical artifact shows some wear and tear but is in nice condition considering the advanced age. It is a fine example of quality British craftsmanship during this era and is a rare piece of international maritime history.
