Corona is a very popular bird name here at TGF. In the Umbrella cockatoo s case his regal crest plumage is his glorious crown which he never hesitates to show off to an admirer. Corona and his flock members entered TGF when their former owners moved into a motel after locating to CO from the NW. Faced with eviction the owners contacted TGF and the flock entered our care. The humans and birds living environment was squalid compounded by empty bottles of alcohol and ashtrays filled with cigarette butts and the room was soiled by the elder dogs who were seldom able to go outside. Scattered around the motel room were stale pieces of old pancakes blueberry muffins chips crackers black oil sunflower seeds and peanut shells. Once transferred to us the flock was taken immediately to Dublin Animal Hospital in Co Springs where they underwent comprehensive avian wellness exams with Dr. Lena Roeder. Based on diagnostic results physical exams and neglectful conditions in which the birds had lived for some time the decision was made that the birds would never be returned to the former owners. Corona s previous main activity was sitting and being cuddled either on her body or cradled in her arms or in the bed. Corona s world changed dramatically at TGF. His outgoing nature blossomed his feathers became powdery white and his activity level increased daily. He had people fans galore. An adoption application was submitted many successful visits were made and the decision to adopt Corona to a Denver area veterinarian was approved. Life went pretty well for Corona except for a couple of behaviors that started small and went out of control. We later learned that the adopter believed that keeping Corona in his cage while she was at work was cruel. While she was working or at home Corona had the run of the house. He took full advantage of every opportunity to behave like a bird seeking out hiding places modifying the woodwork walls doors and closets became his favorite activity. Setting up a cozy love nest under the person s bed was a second favorite. Responding to any person entering his newly claimed living areas was displayed by dramatic feather displays running and chasing after any other animal or human in the house and vocalizing to claim his territory alienated the neighbors.The veterinarian contacted us about behavior problems she experienced with Corona including closet construction materials - destroyed women s apparel and shoes were dismantled into irreparable pieces. Due to these material losses the vet decided that Corona would return to TGF. The deal was sealed when the husband told her it was him or the bird. Fast forward Corona is still the wild and crazy cockatoo with plenty to do but he needs more.
