General Job SummaryPerform skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of Town vehicles and various associated equipment under the supervision of the Shop Foreman.Duties and Responsibilities1. Inspect diagnose and troubleshoot department motorized equipment and vehicles such as dump trucks fire trucks rescue equipment squad cars graders excavators compressors saws tractors mowers loaders chain saws wood chippers painting equipment snow removal equipment etc. 25%2. Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and repair tasks including changing oil and filters fueling and replacing belts hoses wiper blades light bulbs electrical components injection pumps carburetors hydraulic system components controls. Perform field repairs to equipment and vehicles. Maintain hand power and shop tools. 40%3. Troubleshoot repair and or rebuild diesel and gasoline engines transmissions brakes clutches hydraulic and electrical systems and all other supporting equipment. Adjust all equipment components including but not limited to brakes engines hydraulic systems and electrical magnetic components. Perform metal fabrications including but not limited to welding cutting brazing and carbon arc welding. 10%4. Perform set-up service and repairs for the automotive and light duty truck fleet in both the Police and Fire Departments. Transfer equipment from units being cycled out to new. Work includes but is not limited to emergency lighting radio camera computer equipment transport seats partitions and K9 transport equipment. 15%5. Order replacement parts materials and supplies. Read and interpret technical manuals specifications diagrams schematics operator manuals parts books and repair manuals to make repairs or modifications to equipment. Complete vehicle equipment maintenance reports. Assist in developing equipment specifications. 5%6. Snow plowing and salting of streets and or parking areas and clearing snow from pedestrian ways using pick-up trucks loader sidewalk maintainer and snow blowers. Maintain a clean and orderly shop. Assist Foreman in setting priorities for equipment repairs. Perform shop Foreman duties in their absence. 5%Perform additional duties as assigned and attend the Town required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observes safety health and sanitation codes regulations or practices required by the Town or governmental authority.Required Minimum QualificationsEducation & ExperienceVocational technical degree from an accredited program in gasoline and or diesel mechanics. Three (3) years experience repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment. Valid Class B Commercial Driver s License with Tanker (N) endorsement and no air brake restriction. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in Electrical Brakes Engines or Suspension. Knowledge Skills and AbilitiesGeneral knowledge in welding (stick mig tig) cutting torches brazing and metal fabrication. Skilled in automotive OEM and aftermarket low voltage system design installation and repair. Skilled in troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical issues with a variety of equipment. Skilled in utilizing a variety of advisory data and information such as work orders vehicle maintenance reports and records repair and operating manuals electrical schematics hydraulics diagrams procedures and guidelines. Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery. Ability to stay current with advanced technology through employer provided training and or formal classes. Ability to explain demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to requests from others. Ability to establish and maintain effective harmonious cooperative and productive working relationships with other employees and to effectively communicate with all Town employees the public contractors and sales persons. Ability to add and subtract multiply divide calculate percentages fractions and decimals. Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgment in performing work activities. The Town may consider any equivalent amount of credentials licensures training or experience that provides the necessary knowledge skills and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.Equipment UsedPosition requires a minimum basic understanding of the operating functions and capabilities of all vehicles and equipment in the Town fleet such as Microsoft Office Suite MPV Plant Mobile work order module AllData Mobile Diagnostics ATEQ (tire pressure monitoring system) OTC diagnostic scanner Fluke electrical meter 12-24 volt battery testing system Overhead and mobile crane Stationary vehicle hoist Mobile lift column truck hoist Air compressors Lubricant systems Jacks supports & pullers Hydraulic hose carry crimp assembly Parts washers Assorted hand power & pneumatic tools Hand drills & drill press Hand & stationary band saws Welding & grinding equipment Metal lathe Forklift Working ConditionsNormal hours for the position are October 1 March 31 Monday Friday 7 am 3 pm and April 1 September 30 Monday Thursday 6 am 3 pm and Friday 6 am- 10 am. The position may be required to work additional hours as per demands of the job. Must be willing and able to be on 24 hour call. Must be able to be at the Town Hall within 60 minutes after receiving call.Physical RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the job. Work in a variety of outdoor weather conditions odors toxic agents violence noise vibrations wetness machinery electrical currents or traffic hazards.
