Sabbath Is it a day of our earthly week or could it be something else This is a KJV Bible study guide.I m sure there are many more but I feel these are a few pertinent verses and chapters on this topic Matthew 11 28-29 (rest for our souls) Matthew 12 8 Mark 2 27 and 3 4 Romans chapter 14 1 Corinthians 5 7 (Christ is our Passover our high Sabbath now) 2 Corinthians 4 18 Colossians 2 14-16 Hebrews 3 11 & Hebrews chapter 4 James 4 14.Romans 14 4 Who art thou that judgest another man s servant to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea he shall be holden up for God is able to make him stand. Romans 14 5 One man esteemeth one day above another another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. Romans 14 6 He that regardeth the day regardeth it unto the Lord and he that regardeth not the day to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth eateth to the Lord for he giveth God thanks and he that eateth not to the Lord he eateth not and giveth God thanks. Romans 14 7 For none of us liveth to himself and no man dieth to himself. Romans 14 8 For whether we live we live unto the Lord and whether we die we die unto the Lord whether we live therefore or die we are the Lord s. Romans 14 9 For to this end Christ both died and rose and revived that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.I m somewhat curious. Is a certain day of our earthly week truly what is important God and the unseen realm is eternal. The life of a flesh human is like a wisp of smoke or a vapor in comparison to the eternity. Does the word sabbath mean a 24 hour period here on earth or does it mean something else Let s say a human man lives to be 50 years old. How many earth days is that 18 250 days if my math is right. There are 52 weeks in a year thus there are at least 52 sabbath days per year regardless of what day you call sabbath. 52 X 50 years 2 650 sabbath days in that 50 year period or about 15% of that 50 year period. If a humans life is like a vapour compared to the eternity how can something that only occurs in a fraction (15%) of that time be important to Him I have to admit that I am befuddled I do not understand. I ll ask the question again. Could the word sabbath as used in some verses mean something besides a day of the week here on earth I think it does. I believe it to be the rest we enter into when we believe on Him (Jesus Christ Hebrews chapter 4). I choose not to believe it is just a certain day of our earth week at this time as some may choose to do. I believe it goes way beyond that. I think it means a rest in activity instead of a rest from activity.Just some questions to think about Do we really know what day of the week it is How accurate has time been kept over the millennium Is it a certain day of our Earth time that is important or our obedience and our reverence of God that are important More to think about is the land requires a sabbath also. How many actually know that Research this yourself.Again a work in progress just like I am.Let s continue our talk about the word Sabbath as used in the KJV Bible. I believe it to have more than one meaning depending on which verse it appears in. In some verses it refers to an holy day a set aside day a special day and reason for being special. In other verses it means something totally different. Some of my thoughts and questions follow.During the days when God was creating He rested on the seventh day (His day or an Earth man day 2 Peter 3 8 describes a Lord s day in relation to a mans day). In the fourth commandment He tells us to observe this day of rest as well. I see that He wants us to be obedient to Him in observance of this weekly Sabbath rest. This once a week rest is great for our bodies it gives them time to recover from 6 days of labor. This reminds me of letting farm land rest every seventh year you plant it for 6 years then you don t plant it for 1 year it rests. Our bodies need this type of rest more often than every seventh year though. Some insist on following this particular commandment. I often wonder why the following of this one commandment is so important. Sometimes I feel like asking the question have you followed and obeyed all of the other commandments If not why the emphasis on this one What happens if you don t follow them all Is it even possible to follow and obey all commandments in the first place Please read James 2 10. If a man can t follow them (reach the finish line achieve redemption and eternal life) what is the purpose of the commandments Read Romans 3 20 below. Am I saying don t even try to obey the commandments No way Always give it your best shot In New Testament verses we are told we should labor and try to enter into the rest that can only be gotten from true belief and complete trust in Him (God Jesus Christ) no mention of a specific day of the week in these verses (Hebrews chapter 4). I can only assume this would be a completely different kind of rest. It results in peace hope joy confidence a kind of rest you can t get from just taking a day off once a week. Taking a day off certainly helps you but it can t help you to the same extent as entering into His rest. Entering into His rest is a permanent change. I believe we are talking about at least two different kinds of rest and two different meanings of the word Sabbath. Plus I m not saying you have to agree with my thoughts let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind (Romans 14 5).Romans 3 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight for by the law is the knowledge of sin. (This verse among others tells us that no flesh can be saved by the law. The law lets us know what sin is though that is its purpose see Galatians 2 16 also).Matthew 11 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls.My thoughts physical weekly temporary rest for our flesh body is important. But we can obtain eternal rest for our souls if we believe in and pass our cares unto Christ. I believe this is more important eternal rest and life for the soul versus temporary rest for our physical bodies. I think it means a rest in activity instead of a rest from activity. In any case please continue to study your Bibles completely as possible and learn. Regardless of what you believe and do study the Bible completely cover to cover.
