R417A is a zeotropic HFC refrigerant blend developed as a replacement for R22 in existing air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. It is primarily used for retrofit applications where maintaining the original system components and lubricant is desirable. R417A is composed of R125, R134a, and a small amount of R600 (isobutane). It has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0) and is classified as ASHRAE safety group A1 (low toxicity, non-flammable under normal operating conditions). This refrigerant operates at pressures similar to R22 but delivers slightly lower cooling capacity and efficiency. A key advantage is its compatibility with mineral oil and alkylbenzene lubricants, which often eliminates the need for an oil change during retrofit. Because R417A is a zeotropic blend, it exhibits temperature glide, meaning phase change occurs over a temperature range rather than at a single point. Charging must therefore be done in the liquid phase to maintain correct composition.
