Anyone researching Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) quickly runs into a recurring term: levels. Documentation is described as Level 1, Level 2, all the way up to Level 4 or 5, but what actually changes between these levels, and why does it matter which one an organization chooses? Level 1: Digitized, but static Level 2: Cross-referenced navigation Level 3: Structured, database-driven content Level 4: Fully interactive Level 5: Predictive and integrated The level system is essentially a way of describing how interactive and structured a piece of technical documentation is. Historically, this classification (and in India, formalized under standards like JSG 0852) was used to define exactly what capabilities a defence contractor needed to deliver alongside their equipment. Newer approaches sometimes favor a functionality matrix instead of strict levels, specifying required features directly (search, multimedia, diagnostics, etc.), but the level terminology remains widely used and understood.
