Refugee School Impact Coordinator (part-time) - Compensation: $2

Application Deadline July 25 2013 Primary Purpose The Refugee School Impact Coordinator offers support and services to refugee parents and students as they navigate the challenges of the American school system. The Refugee School Impact Coordinator empowers and encourages refugee parents to be involved in their child s education in order to maximize the student s academic performance. Essential Duties Welcome and orient refugee families to the community. Teach monthly orientation seminars to refugee parents. Develop lesson plans for these seminars focusing on topics such as U.S. parenting culture child safety extracurricular activities and college preparation. Work with clients to remove barriers to optimal school performance and attendance. Connect clients to in-house support and make referrals to external service providers. Identify support services that may assist clients in education participation such as ESL and transportation. Connect refugee parents with opportunities for teacher interaction and school observation. Facilitate communication between refugee parents and teachers. Encourage refugee families to develop ambitious yet reasonable educational goals. Document all contacts and services in client case files and maintain case note logs. Complete all required reports. Documentation demands are rigorous. Connect refugee parents with volunteer mentors. Advocate on behalf of refugee students and refugee parents in the school system and on behalf of refugee-serving voluntary agencies. Offer interpretation and translation services to refugee clients as well as transportation to appointments as necessary. (Compensation is paid by CWS for mileage when using personal vehicle.) Attend trainings and conferences as requested by supervisor. Keep informed about refugee and immigrant issues and available services to refugees using current information to better identify and serve refugee clients. Represent the program at meetings and speaking engagements relevant to the responsibilities of the position. Perform all duties in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. Undertake other duties as assigned. Work varied hours including some night and weekend work. Must have valid driver s license and suitable vehicle for transporting clients. Qualifications Education B.A. or experience in refugee resettlement teaching or related field. Experience Previous work experience in public schools and interest in refugee resettlement or other direct social services is desired. Cultural sensitivity is essential.
