A beloved husband to my Mom Ora father of 9 with 18 grandchildren is in the fight of his life. You see he has been living with cirrhosis of the liver since 2015 and liver cancer since 2017.What Happened My parents are both Army veterans served honorably in Germany. However upon returning to the states they struggled to make ends meet. Life was challenging for us back then my parents had to deal with unemployment we moved around a lot in and out of New Jersey and my father fell on hard times. He tried to do whatever he could to provide for his family.My Dad thinks he contracted Hepatitis C in the 1970s because of vaccinations needed in the military. My Mom also contracted Hepatitis C via a blood transfusion while in the military. Both of my parents went through the treatment protocol and regimen twice and my Mom successfully completed her treatment but unfortunately for my Dad the treatments failed.In 2015 my Dad started Tace treatments which gives direct chemo to the affected areas he had 2 treatments that shrunk the lesions in the liver and was placed on the liver transplant list. In 2016 he had a full body CAT scan and they found a spot near his esophagus and had to undergo a series of tests and in July 2017 and we learned the cirrhosis metastasized in the lymph nodes giving him the diagnosis of liver cancer and thereby taking him off the transplant list.Various Treatments In September 2017 my Dad joined the cancer study at Hahnemann Hospital Drexel University in Philadelphia Pa. The cancer study was testing 2 trial drugs against a current drug already on the market. There were 3 phases to the study the control arm which was medication already on the market and control arm 2 and 3 the trial drugs. Because of the severity of my Dad s cancer he had to be on the FDA approved drug. He traveled to Philly every 2 weeks sometimes weekly for treatment and monitoring.In January 2018 he had a severe reaction to the treatment drug and they stopped the treatments. The drug kept the lesions from the cirrhosis with no growth however the cancer in the lymph nodes continued to grow. Since the medication was partially ineffective they recommended that he stay off the medication with no further treatment options.Next Steps January 2018 we moved him from Drexel to New York Presbyterian Hospital. The team of Doctors are creating a treatment plan that includes Immunotherapy which is a different form of chemo Holistic treatments including Intravenous Vitamin C and Immunocal treatments of 2 3 treatments a week. These Holistic treatments average 550.00 per treatment and my Dad needs this treatment 2x 3x a week. Some of his monthly expenses include an additional 150.00 for vitamin supplements. The costs are beginning to mount up to more than 1000.00 a week for the various out of pocket costs. Doctors say it will take anywhere from six months to a year for my Dad to see any shrinkage of the tumors. In the meantime our family is faced with the burden of medical week-to-week and additional unforeseen expenses.
