Position Title Chief Operating Officer (COO) Special Olympics Montana ORGANIZATION The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports to children and adults with intellectual disabilities in order to develop physical fitness demonstrate courage experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts skills and friendship with their families other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Founded in 1968 as the world s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities Special Olympics transforms lives through the joy of sport every day everywhere reaching more than 4 million athletes globally in 170 nations. Since its start in 1970 Special Olympics Montana (SOMT) has steadily and successfully grown its reach to more than 2 000 athletes with intellectual disabilities annually. SOMT is positioned for and accomplishing significant new growth guided by its 2011-2015 strategic plan along with an expansion vision directed at 2020 and beyond. To achieve our vision of serving 3 000 athletes annually current strategic emphasis includes a campaign to raise 1.2 million to support additional full time employee growth of 5.5 positions. The search for the Chief Operating Officer comes at a transformative time in organizational growth. POSITION SOMT is looking for a seasoned leader whose core values align with our movement and work family. The COO will be mission-focused strategic and process-minded with experience scaling an organization leading a senior management team and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse talented individuals. The successful COO will have the skills sensitivity and ability to tap into the strength that each member of the team brings to our mission. It is essential that the COO bring leadership and management skills to increase our reach while maintaining creative vision and energy that drives our movement. RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to the President CEO the Chief Operating Officer will lead all internal operations and have the following key responsibilities In partnership with the President CEO create and implement a strategic plan that achieves our long range vision. Serve as internal leader of the organization Provide strong day-to-day leadership for all staff cultivating a high performance team inspired by each other. Coordinate preparation and implementation of annual departmental operating plans and budgets. Lead management process that measures and evaluates progress against goals. Provide effective communication of strategic direction and annual plans with key stakeholders (i.e. Board of Directors staff and volunteer leadership). Manage human resource functions Oversee all personnel recruitment training assessments appreciation and exits. Provide continuity and knowledge during staff changes and transitions. Instill a human development and coaching culture. Oversee management of employee benefits. Ensure compliance of all employment laws. Supervise senior management team and department operations Provide guidance and support to five direct reports (VP Field Service VP Sports & Competition VP Development Finance Director and Executive Assistant) Oversee organizational branding imaging and communication. Ensure that fundraising plans meet the needs of annual plans and budgets. Oversee technology and ensure that it keeps pace with growth needs of the organization. Ensure that accounting systems procedures are in compliance with standard accounting principles and state and federal laws. Oversee facilities & organization assets Ensure maintenance and care of property including office building equipment and vehicles. Oversee organizational risk management Ensure personal and workplace safety. Ensure the safety of field operations. Ensure that all contractual obligations are properly negotiated screened and executed. KEY QUALIFICATIONS Experience in managing a values-driven organization with passion for leading social change. Ability to embrace servant leadership with an attitude of gratitude. Curious and adaptable personality Enjoys working hard and looks for challenges Comfortable taking charge of situations Ability to maintain a steady presence in a fast-paced visionary and expanding work environment. Results-proven track record of exceeding goals. High level of business acumen to be successful in an entrepreneurial not-for-profit environment. Strong leadership and management skills as evidenced by scaling up organizations developing and empowering leaders and enabling staff to succeed. Evidence of good decision-making through a combination of analysis wisdom experience and judgment. Ability to think strategically while servicing annual operations and being flexible to future trends and consequences. Ability to develop a strong workforce and processes that build our capacity to serve more athletes families volunteers and communities. Effective fluid professional-level communication skills both written and verbal. Broad experience in human resource management organizational leadership strategic planning finance business analysis information systems education training and marketing. Valid driver s license and clean driving record willingness to travel in state and out of state as required. Undergraduate degree required.
