The 1st and most important step for myself is to assess the student s musical abilities. This is includes his her competence in music theory and technical ability. I am completely comfortable with teaching any beginner who has no concept of either. It is also important to help a student create a set of realistic goals and benchmarks. This helps the student understand that learning any instrument is a step-by-step process that cannot be achieved overnight. I have been playing guitar and piano for 37yrs and I still do not think my skill has reached it s max level. During individual lessons specifically I find it very helpful to play along with the student as much as possible.
