His phase Hi Joe is more than an understanding of his own name it s a warm greeting to the person near him. Joe is known for loving head scratches and you would be hard pressed to not find the top of his head pressed against the side of his cage just begging for a good scritch. Joe is sociable with people and connects very well with other parrots. At The Gabriel Foundation Joe shares a large outdoor aviary with Kiwi an older Orange-winged Amazon. When the two are outside Kiwi and Joe will always be found hanging out together. Their relationship is reminiscent of a mentor and student the old and wise teaching the young and impressionable. Joe does step up and also can be heard saying come here He certainly has lived a life around people and parrots and has developed a perspective as a result. Joe came to TGF in 2005 was adopted in 2009 and returned back in 2010. Joe needs a caring home committed to the future. Joe s species in nature originates from Venezuela Brazil Paraguay and northern Argentina. In nature these Amazons forage for food and carve nest cavities in large trees all of which requires the unique and adapted beak parrots are known for. In captivity it is very important to replicate some of these behaviors for the birds. Joe prefers softer woods to split and flake.
