He became an associate professor in the Faculty of Economics University of Tokyo in 1982 professor in 1993 and professor in the Graduate School of Economics in 1996. He has been a professor in the Faculty of International Social Sciences Gakushuin University since 2016. He is also a former adviser of Statistical Division Bank of Japan and member of Economic Strategy Council various government committees for the Ministry of International Trade and Industry the Ministry of Finance the Economic Planning Agency and the Fair Trade Commission.
