The Challenge We are looking for an experienced Engineer to join our Roadway Design team in our Raleigh headquarters. This team creates and reviews roadway design plans lighting and electrical plans and provides technical expertise to internal and external partners. In this role you will Serve as an Electrical Engineer in our Lighting and Electrical Team. Independently apply professional techniques and standards preparing and evaluating moderately-complex to major roadway lighting design projects. Assist higher-level engineers in the design of more complex lighting and electrical systems such as static weighing systems at truck weight stations daytime and nighttime lighting designs for roadway tunnels with emergency power generation capabilities automatic lighting and or power system switching and intelligent roadway lighting control systems. Assist lower-level engineers in the design of corridor interchange lighting systems. Attend and assist in leading project meetings. Respond to and assist lower-level engineers responding to requests from other NCDOT divisions & units utility companies and local governments. Draft correspondence related to the development and review of lighting and electrical systems policies and procedures. What You BringStrong knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering concepts principles and practices related to the design installation operation and maintenance of lighting electrical systems electro-mechanical controls and power systems. Experience developing and reviewing lighting and electrical plans and details to determine compliance with NCDOT lighting & electrical guidelines polices electrical codes modern electrical and lighting materials laws and ordinances pertaining to electrical systems. Demonstrated ability to use photometric lighting design software to optimize lighting layouts and to apply appropriate methodology to meet conductor sizing and voltage drop requirements in the electrical design of the lighting systems. Experience effectively delivering projects on time while managing multiple priorities. Excellent verbal and written communications to express moderately-complex lighting and electrical concepts with other higher-level professionals and assist in training lower-level engineers. Working knowledge of NCDOT & Roadway Design. Ability to assist in developing and maintaining lighting and electrical guidelines polices and standard operating procedures for the lighting team. Computer skills using MicroStation AGi32 or other photometric software for use in the preparation of lighting and electrical designs. Skills to evaluate existing and proposed roadway sections to determine the justification for lighting using a cost-benefit analysis tool determining the value to the public of a lighting system with consideration given to needs benefits and costs. Ability to assist in the training of lower-level engineers and Engineering Associates in the design review construction and testing of various lighting and electrical system components and submittals in accordance with NCDOT lighting policy and guidelines. Experience to provide technical information and conduct studies. Ability to aid local governments and others in the design and review of lighting and electrical systems related to roadways. Ability to make field inspections and advise Resident Engineers as to whether the contractor s work is in conformance with the design plans and specifications. Skills to physically test direct others in the testing of completed Lighting & Electrical work to ensure contract compliance and to test electrical properties of circuits before acceptance of and payment for projects. NoteWe may require registration as a professional engineer by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. Education & ExperienceBachelors Degree in engineering and 3 years of relevant experience or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
