The ChallengeWe are looking for a Senior Rail Design Engineer to join our Rail team. The unique nature of railroads and rail operations (privately owned operated and for-profit modal system) requires strong technical support and decision making supporting rail-exclusive projects plus vital rail components of highway port transit and economic development project delivery in planning design and construction. In this role you will Direct the advanced engineering and management of major railroad design and construction projects. Oversee multiple private engineering firms and manage other NCDOT unit efforts supporting assigned projects. Manage complex multi-million dollar projects from concept and environmental coordination to preparation of preliminary right-of-way final plans and through construction. Develop and negotiate agreements to deliver projects with stakeholders including municipalities private railroad partners and Federal agencies including the Federal Railroad Administration. Review transit and regional commuter rail projects and other projects that impact railroad corridors. Coordinate with railroad companies municipalities local and state officials transit authorities other NCDOT Units State and Federal agencies the Federal Railroad Administration private engineering firms contractors and the public to meet project schedules and develop correct project design. What You BringConsiderable knowledge of professional engineering theory techniques practices and procedures related to railroad design construction and operations. In depth knowledge of engineering practices and standards. Demonstrated ability to apply advanced engineering skills to work with teams of advanced level engineers and technicians. Experience coordinating assignments and providing guidance and direction to consultant engineers. Excellent communication skills and experience working with municipal officials politicians citizens railroad officials Federal Railroad Administration and or transit administration officials. Education and ExperienceBachelor s degree in engineering and 4 years of relevant experience or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
