Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Scientist to provide support to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) in La Jolla CA. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. BACKGROUNDThe SWFSC s Marine Mammal & Turtle Division (MMTD) conducts research on marine mammals and sea turtles to monitor trends in abundance and provide management advice to domestic and international bodies. Understanding the health of individual animals is critical for identifying and managing threats to protected species which is mandated by the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). The SWFSC is seeking support services for laboratory analysis focused on health assessment including hormone studies to assess physiological condition. Average estimated hours per week are 35 to 40. Telework is permitted if approved in advance. Start Date April 1 2019Location La Jolla CA 92037 Salary and Benefits Commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package. DUTIESKey tasks include but are not necessarily limited to the following Conduct laboratory analysis of hormone levels in marine mammal tissue. Digitally enter marine mammal hormone data into spreadsheets and or databases. Other Duties Include Provide the NMFS Project Lead with a digital record (spreadsheet and or database) of all samples processed for hormone measurements by the end of the Period of Performance. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCESelected individual(s) must have the following minimum qualifications Bachelor s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries oceanography social science natural science mathematics or hydrology plus one (1) year of experience in related field or combination of such totaling five (5) years combined education and experience. Additional required qualifications include Experience with marine mammal hormone data handling and databasing.
