Biological Technician-Bonnevill e Dam

Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Biological Technician to provide support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) at the Bonneville Dam in Skamania WA. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. This position will support the NMFS Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) Fish Ecology (FE) Division and other programs as they pertain to conservation and management of federal fisheries protected species and their habitat. This position will examine fish collected at Bonneville Dam for length weight and physical condition. The study provides information on the effects of passage through the federal hydropower system on fish leaving the Snake River. DutiesProcess Juvenile Salmonids From April to June juvenile salmonids are marked as part of ongoing research and monitoring activities at Lower Granite Dam s juvenile fish facility. A subsample of juvenile salmonids tagged at Lower Granite Dam is collected at Bonneville Dam. The technician will be stationed at Bonneville and needs to examine the collected fish for length weight and physical condition. These data need to be recorded Data Entry Fish tag codes and condition data shall be entered into the database concurrent with the work shift. Juvenile data collection will use computer frameworks. Expected position start date and duration The total number of hours a candidate would likely work is 100 or less spread from mid- to late April through the third week of June. Work could be sporadic only occurring when fish were collected via the PIT tag separation-by-code system at Bonneville Dam. Fish are typically collected for five continuous days each week but the start of the five days can vary depending on the candidate s availability. The work has to be accomplished during normal operating hours of the juvenile fish facility (i.e. morning to late afternoon). Location Bonneville Dam in Skamania WA Salary and Benefits Variable part time schedule. Salary commensurate with experience. Required Knowledge and ExperienceEducation Required An Associate degree or 2 years of college-level education with a major in fisheries geology or environmental sciences. Experience Required Minimum of 2 years of experience in the field applicable to this work. Ability to identify juvenile salmonids. Ability to use a computer for data entry. Preferred Knowledge and ExperienceMust be able to identify various species of freshwater fish or be able to learn Ability to stand for long periods. Ability to work with the fish in cold water. Possess valid driver s license. Knowledge of the P4 tagging software and equipment or be able to learn.
