IS PRAYER YOUR STEERING WHEEL OR YOUR SPARE TIRE When driving a car the steering wheel and the tires are all important. Whether someone has a sudden blow out or if he let s go of the steering wheel he can end up in the ditch either way But many people treat prayers more like a spare tire than a steering wheel. Looking at prayer as the way to fix their problems after they ve happened rather than as a way to steer themselves away from trouble in the first place In Psalm 23 David is grateful for God leading him to lay down in the tall grass and to lead him like a shepherd along the still waters. Not only does God restore his soul but David acknowledges that it is God who leads him down the path of righteousness. David isn t even afraid in the valley of the shadow of death because of God s protecting guidance with his rod and staff that not only guide him but comfort him by correcting his course. It s like he could see God s hand on the wheel David is just one biblical example of someone who relies on his prayers more as a steering wheel to keep him out of trouble than as a flat tire to repair the damage of having made bad decisions after the fact.I remember a preacher saying a Christian is like a tire with a slow leak.
